Dizzy Gillespie, trumpet player, composer, singer and arranger, is one of the most important figures in the development of the jazz style known as be-bop. He worked very closely with Thelonious Monk, Charlie “Bird” Parker (whom he credited with the birth of modern jazz) and countless others. His beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, scat-singing, his bent horn, pouched cheeks and his light-hearted personality counted as his most prominent symbols.
